What Is My Actor Headshot Type?

Determining your actor headshot “type” can be a key factor in landing the roles you want. Here are some helpful tips to help you find your type when planning your actor headshots.

Start by looking at your resume and see what types of roles you tend to get called in for. This will give you a good starting point to work from. You can also ask for feedback from people you know, as well as strangers, to get a better understanding of how you’re perceived.

Embrace your age! Whether you’re a confident 50-year-old or a fresh-faced 21-year-old, don’t try to hide your age or appear younger or older than you really are. Instead, let your headshots reflect your unique age and stage of life.

When planning your looks, be specific. Avoid generic descriptions like “young mom” or “young dad” and instead focus on specific character traits that make you stand out. Are you the troubled young mom with a checkered past? The deadbeat stepdad with a chip on his shoulder? Being specific will help you showcase your range and versatility.

Remember, imperfections are what make you stand out in a crowd. Don’t be shy about your big nose, ears, or bushy eyebrows – embrace them! Your unique features are what will make you stand out in a casting pool.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to determine your actor headshot “type” and create headshots that showcase your unique qualities and increase your chances of success in the competitive world of acting.

What Clothes & Colors Should I Wear?

Choosing the right clothes and colors for your actor headshots can make all the difference. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you look your best in front of the camera.

We recommend softer colors for headshots, such as Autumn Brown, Sepia, Blue Grey, Burnt Sienna, Chestnut, Maple, Beige, and Mocha. However, some actors prefer brighter, bolder colors, and it’s ultimately a personal choice. Whatever you choose, make sure the colors complement your skin tone and eye color.

While solid black can look sharp and striking, white tends to wash out your skin tone and make you appear pale, so it’s best to avoid it. We also recommend avoiding distracting patterns, big logos, and loose clothing items. Fitted clothing always looks best on camera.

Consider the style of your clothing. Avoid any bell-sleeve tops or ruffles that may not look good on film. Keep in mind that simplicity and classic styles tend to work best for headshots.

Lastly, talk with your photographer about the best headshot background colors so that your wardrobe choices pop.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to choose the right clothes and colors for your actor headshots, ensuring that you look your best and stand out in a crowded field of aspiring actors.

ARE YOUR ACTOR HEADSHOTS SHOT WITH NATURAL OR STUDIO LIGHT?

To ensure that we capture the best possible headshots for our clients, we use a combination of natural and studio light for our actor headshot sessions in LA. This allows us to create a variety of looks and moods, depending on your personal preferences and the type of roles you’re looking to audition for.

Our experienced team of photographers is skilled in working with both natural and studio lighting setups, and we will work with you to determine which option is best for your particular needs. Whether you’re looking for a more dramatic, moody look or a brighter, natural look, we have the expertise and equipment to deliver the results you’re looking for.

So whether we use natural light or studio light for your headshot session, you can rest assured that we’ll work with you to create stunning, professional-grade headshots that will help you stand out from the crowd.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I CHANGE OUTFITS?

In order to help you capture a range of looks and styles, our packages allow you the flexibility to change your outfit as many times as you’d like within the allotted time frame for your actor headshot session. This means you can experiment with different outfits and looks to find the ones that best showcase your unique personality and style.

DO I NEED A WARDROBE STYLIST?

We understand that you may not want to invest in new clothing or accessories specifically for your headshot session, which is why we offer the flexibility to work with what you already own. Sergio and his team can help you choose the best outfits and accessories from your existing wardrobe to create a polished and professional look that showcases your unique style and personality.

However, if you do want to purchase new clothing or accessories for your headshot session, we recommend buying items that you can easily return after the shoot. This allows you to experiment with different looks and styles without the added expense of purchasing new clothing that you may only wear once. Our team can provide guidance on which items are most suitable for your headshot session, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

I AM LOOKING FOR CHARACTER SHOTS. CAN YOU HELP?

Absolutely! We specialize in capturing subtle character shots for actors. We believe that less is more when it comes to portraying a character. We can help you find the perfect look and expression to capture the essence of the character you want to portray, without relying on obvious costumes or props.

DO YOU PLAY MUSIC?

Certainly! We love to set the mood with some music during our actor headshot sessions. We typically use Spotify and select upbeat tunes to keep things lively. If you have a preference for a specific genre or would like to plug in your own device, just let us know and we’ll make sure to accommodate your request.

IF I PAY FOR RETOUCHING, WHAT IS INCLUDED?

The retouching service includes removing stray hairs, pimples, dark circles, and whitening of eyes and teeth. However, please note that we cannot photoshop makeup, such as making eyeshadow darker or lighter, or adding more blush. If you choose to have your hair and makeup done by an artist, please communicate any concerns beforehand. It is also important to note that we do not mix and match features from different photos. We strive to capture your natural beauty and enhance it, rather than alter your appearance.

WILL I LIKE MY ACTOR HEADSHOTS?

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Actor headshots are meant to capture the real you, including your unique features and imperfections. While makeup, hair, and retouching can enhance your appearance, true confidence comes from within. We ask that you come to your session with a positive attitude and embrace your individuality. We work with professionals and expect realistic expectations from our clients. Remember, photography is an art, not magic.

HOW DO I PAY FOR MY HEADSHOT SESSION?

Payment for your headshot session can be made on the day of the shoot, and we may require a non-refundable upfront payment to secure your time slot. We accept all major credit cards and cash, and you will receive a receipt for your payment. However, please note that we do not accept personal checks. If you choose to pay in cash, please ensure that you bring the correct amount as we do not carry change.

DO YOU OFFER RESHOOTS?

We always aim to provide you with the best headshots possible during your session. Therefore, we do not offer re-shoots. We expect you to come prepared and bring your A-game as a professional, just as we bring ours.

WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?

Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds. Once a session is booked, it is reserved specifically for you. However, if you need to reschedule, you may do so 2 days prior to your session and we’ll work with you to find another available date that works for both of us. View our actor headshot rates to schedule.

I'D LIKE TO HIRE YOUR HMU.

Excellent choice! If you’re interested in hiring one of our HMU artists, we recommend that you wash your hair the day before your shoot and arrive with it completely dry. Additionally, please come to your session with a clean face, free of any products, including moisturizer. This will ensure that our artist has a clean canvas to work with and can create the perfect look for you.

Enhancing Your Look: Tips for Hair and Makeup for Your Headshot Session

Option 1: Professional Hair and Make-up Artist

  • For an additional fee, you can choose to have one of our preferred agency-signed Hair and Make-up Artists present during your session. They will stay on set for touch-ups and changes, ensuring that you look your very best. As we are not Hair and Make-up Artists ourselves, our focus remains on the lighting and composition of the image. Having a specialist on set helps to fix common issues such as blotchiness, shininess, and stray hairs.

Option 2: Do It Yourself

  • If you prefer, you can choose to do your own hair and make-up. It’s important to remember that these are actor headshots, not beauty pageant photos. We suggest keeping your make-up and hair natural and simple. Avoid looking overly done up, as we do not offer re-shoots. While some clients have gone to make-up counters for their make-up, we do not recommend this. The make-up may be too heavy, and there will not be anyone on set to fix any problems or do touch-ups or changes.
